Refusing to interfere with the ongoing demolition of unauthorised prawn culture encroachments around Chilika lake, the Orissa High Court directed the state government to frame a detailed policy soon.
The policy should ensure that no shrimp culture pond set up within a kilometre of the lake as directed by the Supreme Court in 1996.
The High Court also asked the government to remove all encroachments from the lake and provide adequate protection to primary fishermen of the area to carry on their traditional fishing practices for the purpose of earning their livelihood. The directions came from the Division Bench of Chief Justice V Gopala Gowda and Justice B N Mohapatra while disposing two writ petitions filed in connection with the ongoing controversies of demolition of encroachments in chilika lake.
